Botanical Garden, a green break

A very enjoyable stop in the historic centre during your holiday in Florence is definitely the Botanical Garden.
A beautiful garden hidden in a place where you would never believe you could find so many plants, some of them very old: the water lily pond, the ancient trees, the tall plants or the greenhouse with rare plants and flowers.

Botanical Garden in Florence

In the 16th century, Cosimo I de Medici, Duke of Florence, because of a growing interest in the world of nature, decides to create the Botanical Garden, it was the 1st December 1545. The Botanical Garden, also known as the Garden of Simples – due to the presence of medicinal plants – was founded as an academy for students who wanted to study plants and it is one of the oldest gardens in the world.

It was designed by the architect Tribolo, the same artist who created the magnificent Boboli Gardens, and it extends for about two hectares.

There are 200 trees in the botanical garden, the oldest of which is the Sughera planted in 1805.

The botanical garden is open all year round with different opening hours depending on the time of year.
