Accessible Florence. The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Florence eliminates architectural barriers

Barrier-free travel in Florence is possible. The city works constantly to be more accessible to all and to try to remove architectural barriers so everyone can enjoy our wonders.
 
The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo 28 rooms on 3 levels: a concentration of art, history and wonder. A must for anyone coming to visit Florence.

Barrier-free travel: the Opera del Duomo Museum

The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is located in the Duomo square behind the Cathedral. It is entirely accessible and equipped with elevators that lead to the three floors of the exhibition and to the panoramic terrace.
For visitors with reduced mobility:

Entrance: accessible through sidewalks with irregular bevel that creates a small variable step 2/3 cm high.
Internal routes: flat, with ramp or elevator.
Treasure Room: the silver altar is reached by 6 steps 17 cm high, equipped with handrails on both sides.

The bathrooms are located on the ground floor, second floor and third floor: door width respectively 88, 85 and 77 cm, with toilet equipped with handle

For blind and visually impaired visitors a “TOUCHABLE” tactile path has been set up: 8 replicas of the museum’s most representative works.
Enlarged texts for the visually impaired, in Braille for the blind, in Italian and English.

The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, in collaboration with the associations Prisma and Comunico, has created videos for the “Access to Opera” App to make visits to the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria del Fiore more accessible through 20 video guides, with graphic reconstructions and images, audio, sounds and descriptions synchronized with subtitles and LIS (Italian Sign Language) narration.

The report with information on accessibility has been realized by Handy Superabile a non-profit association, engaged in the promotion of projects for the “superaAbile tourism”.
