How to Get from Florence Airport to the City Centre

Florence Essentials
The information we share with our guests every day.

If you’re planning your trip to Florence, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is how to get from Amerigo Vespucci Airport to the city centre.

The good news is that Florence is a relatively compact city, and the airport is only a few kilometres from the historic centre. The two most popular options are taxi and tram, both simple and reliable.

The best choice mainly depends on the type of trip you’re planning, the number of people travelling with you and how much luggage you have

At a glance

  • Florence Airport is about 5 km from the historic city centre.
  • Taxis, the tram and private transfers all provide easy access to the city centre.
  • A taxi is the most convenient option, especially if you’re travelling with luggage.
  • The tram is the most affordable alternative.
  • If you’re staying at one of our properties, you may need to continue on foot or by taxi from Santa Maria Novella Station.

Taxi: the easiest option

For many visitors, taking a taxi is the simplest way to reach their accommodation.

Taxis are available just outside the arrivals terminal and take you directly to your destination without any transfers.

This option is particularly suitable if you:

  • are travelling with heavy luggage;
  • have just arrived after a long flight;
  • are travelling with children;
  • prefer to reach your accommodation without navigating the city.

The biggest advantage is its simplicity: get in, relax and arrive directly at your destination.

Tram: the most affordable option

The tram line connects Florence Airport directly to Santa Maria Novella Station, in the heart of the city.

It is a modern, efficient service used daily by both locals and visitors.

If you’re travelling light, the tram is often an excellent choice.

However, it’s useful to know that once you arrive at the station, you may still need to walk or take a taxi to reach your accommodation.

For example, our properties are located in the historic centre but not directly next to the station:

  • Residenza De’ Boni, near the Duomo – about a 15-minute walk.
  • Residenza Covoni, near Piazza della Signoria – about a 15–20-minute walk.
  • Residenza Benizzi, near Palazzo Pitti and Ponte Vecchio – about a 20-minute walk.

The walk is pleasant if you’re travelling light, but many guests with larger suitcases prefer to complete the journey by taxi.

Private transfer

f you’re looking for maximum comfort, you can also arrange a private airport transfer.

Your driver will meet you on arrival and take you directly to your accommodation.

This is a popular option for families, small groups and first-time visitors to Florence.

If you’re staying at Le Residenze a Firenze and would like to arrange a private transfer, we work with a trusted local driver that we regularly recommend to our guests. Contact us before your arrival and we’ll be happy to provide all the details.

How long does it take?

Travel times may vary depending on traffic and your arrival time.

As a general guide:

  • a taxi usually takes 15–25 minutes;
  • the tram reaches Santa Maria Novella Station in about 20 minutes.

The main difference isn’t the travel time, but the level of comfort, especially if you’re travelling with luggage.

Which option should you choose?

The best option depends on your travel style.

Travelling with heavy luggage

A taxi is usually the most practical and comfortable solution.

Our advice

There isn’t one solution that’s right for everyone.

Whichever you choose, getting from Florence Airport to the city centre is straightforward and the journey is quick.
